This pattern used to be pulled, with permission, from an extant garment within the textile selection of the San Diego Historical Society in San Diego, California. The bloomer costume used to be made by Mary Thurston Stickney. We know this on account of a footnote within the book, Records of a California Circle of relatives, Journals and Letter of Lewis C. Gunn and Elizabeth Le Breton Gunn, written by Anna Lee Marston in 1928. Anna Lee Marston used to be Mary Thurston Stickney's niece. Miss Stickney used to be a Quaker and Quakers did wear bloomers. It's surprising what number of women wore the bloomer costume. Many years of research used to be gathered for you, the public, to have in mind the bloomer costume as a garment and not a political commentary. The research to document who wore the bloomer costume and where it used to be worn would fill volumes. It used to be a very practical garment. The Background Notes within the pattern are a fraction of the research. Great for Civil War Living History, Antebellum living history. SASS Living history events. SASS Costumes.
